Mindmistress changed back to Lorelei, afraid that Ataxim could drain even her intellect from her and derive power from it---but wouldn't notice the two powerless ones---the way a glutton wouldn't pay any attention to two unsalted crackers when a four-course meal awaited.

The Frodo and Sam reference in Mordor is very deliberate. I like the idea of the two most powerless ones determining the fate of the others. Lorelei, of course, is thinking of Lucy and Ethel in I LOVE LUCY reruns.
